It’s a well known fact that the night markets are the place to eat well in Taipei.  According to my dog eared copy of Fodor’s Taiwan 1987, YBC was originally the name of a street food cart that sold a treat called Pickled Yummy Canolis, a delicacy of the Da’an District.  Fodor’s doesn’t specify the exact nature of the Pickled Yummy Canoli , but we know that the food cart was nominated for a Firestone Flag, which is the street food equivalent of a Michelin Star.  One early morning, wandering home from 3rd shift at the factory, Mr. Yang stopped by Pickled Yummy Canolis for a sack of salted 'noli.  Just as he was about to dip the first 'noli into the butter tub, a drunken bike messenger careened by the food cart, moving with the quickness of a sand crab across the rain slicked street.  At the same time, an elderly lady with a cart full of stuffed pandas was attempting to cross through the market.  The bike messenger desperately tried to lock his rear wheel, but his cheap chain snapped, and he flew over the bars into the cart of pandas.  From then on out, it was pure pandamonium.

The next morning, Mr. Yang woke up, fingers still slick with butter and brine.  He remembered the accident, the snapped chain, the bodies of stuffed pandas strewn about in the dark streets, stuffing spilling out.  Mr. Yang told the story to his roommate Mr. Tsai, who keyed in on the important aspects of the story, namely the initials of the food cart, and the broken chain.  He saw an opportunity.  PYC chains was born.  Mr. Tsai still insists the best chain lube is that butter that comes in a pump jug like they have at the movie theater.

PYC chains are well made chains that fly completely under the radar in the US.  But if you have bought a nice bike in the past 10 years, chances are it had a chain made by PYC, as they are a big time OEM supplier.  That means they make chains under their own name but also for other folks under their name.

PYC chains shift great, and these particular chains are fully nickel plated.  That, bang for the ruble, is the best coating for a chain out there.  It’s the most durable and longest lasting, least rusting of every material except stainless steel.

Most ‘known’ chain brands have fully nickel plated chains starting at 50-70 dollars.  This PYC 11 speed chain is a steal at 32 bucks.  It works every bit as a good ‘name brand’ chain, but because there is no sexy packaging and no cardboard box and no big advertising campaign, they’re way less. That’s a good thing!
