The bike industry bro world loves to sell you hubs that sound like a swarm of angry hornets and chase low weights like their cnc machines are popping GLP-1's, usually right before they pack full of grit and turn to mulch on a backcountry descent. The ROLLCii RC39DB boost hubs isn't on that tip. These are well made, forged, Taiwanese hubs built for actual off road riding.  You know the kind: where you’re miles away from the nearest taco stand, no cell service, the weather is quickly turning ick, and you just need your stuff to work.  If you are not thinking about your gear, you have the right gear.

Instead of shaving off every possible gram to look good on a spreadsheet, ROLLCii designed the RC39DB around a big ass 7075 aluminum 17mm axle. Whence you’re slamming a loaded bike through a chunky rock garden or leaning hard into a rutted corner, the hub actually tracks: stiff instead of flexing and prematurely roasting your bearings. High-quality enduro sealed bearings. They're good without being expensive.  You can repack them, or replace them, but it's likely you'll get many many years of service out of them before you need to do either.  White Industries also uses Enduro, as do many good hub brands. The bearings are big, and they are sealed tight enough to brush off deep Vermont mud, impromptu creek crossings, and whatever general entropy the trail throws at them.

When it comes to the guts of the thing, the freehub relies on an independent, double-phase 6-pawl design biting into a 60-tooth ratchet. Who cares? Ok: when you stomp on the pedals to ratchet up a nasty, rooty techy climb or accelerate out of a tight switchback, it engages with a quickness. Pawls are simple.  They are robust.  Don't let anyone tell you that a star ratchet is what you need.  Wanna field service a star ratchet hub?  Good luck finding the springs and washers in the leaves.  Don't wanna service it in the field but just want to take your rear wheel off because you have a sidewall gash?  Guess what!  The spring loaded freehub will often just auto evacuate the hub shell, spraying the trail with small bits of metal that you will almost certainly never find.

Whether you're lacing up a custom wheelset for an ATB bike meant to survive the the next 2 years, or just building a dependable whip for daily woods ambling, the ROLLCii RC39DB is a damn fine choice.  Did I mention they look really good?  We see many nice hubs.  The Rollcii hubs have a finish that puts them on par with the nicest hubs out there. You also  get dependable engagement, serious stiffness, and the kind of long-term durability previously reserved for mid century Japanese SLRs.
