If you are a fan of long things, like Jethro Tull’s Thick as a Brick, Artamène ou le Grand Cyrus, the Mahabharata, stretch limos and siphonophores, then you will love the Joe Appaloosa.  Cause it is long.  Not quite as long as a  siphonophore but pretty dang long.  Long bikes are stable, which of course is a good thing.  Unstable bikes are like high school relationships.  They might be fun, but it’s gunna hurt in the long run.

Rivendell has been slowly enlongening their bikes over the past decade.  The Joe Appaloosa and its close cousin the Atlantis, are both about the same length.  I thought, when I first rode a Joe, that it was going to be weird feeling.  Slow.  Turn like the American Dream.  But that was not the case.  It rode like a bike.  Further confirmed when I took it on a few day tour of Michaux, which has tight singletrack, fire roads, dirt roads, and pavement.  I rode it loaded, and lo and behold, the only thing it didn’t like were the very tightest singletrack switchbacks.  Everything else the Joe Appaloosa handled well.  Climbed in a planted, stable way.  Descending felt super safe, but I could go blindingly fast and not worry about speed wobble.  The frame is stiff.  Gear weight does not phase it.  Stiff is good.  Wet noodles are fun in ramen, not to ride.

Basically this is the bike to get if you meet the following criteria:

You want a comfortable bike for any distance of riding

You love lugs

You don’t live in a really icy or muddy area

You don’t need a dedicated tight singletrack bike

You don’t mind a quill stem

You don’t need tires bigger than 2.2 inches

You want a bike that will look as good in 20 years as it does today.

This is a demo Joe Appaloosa.  As of this writing, 1/18/25, it has zero miles on it.  You can come demo it, and it's slightly discounted because we didn't consult anyone to make it, we just made a fun bike.  We can do minor things to the fit or build, but generally demo bikes are sold as is, and we're not going take off the bars or cranks or whatever if you happen to have a spare set in your parts bin.  If you wanna swap it, we can do it, but there's gunna be a parts and labor charge.

All complete bikes that are bought online have a general shipping fee that's assigned by our E commerce program.  It is not the correct charge, it's likely not even in the ball park.  In the US, we will ONLY ship via Bikeflights with the full retail value of the bike insured.  For other areas, we use either UPS or DHL, but they are not insured.  Let's say the shipping through bike flights comes out to 180 dollars.  That's just a number, not what it will be.  When you buy this bike right here, Shopify might bill you for 70 dollars in shipping.  We'd send you an invoice for the balance, which in the case of this example is 110 dollars.

Obviously the best thing to do is to pick it up locally, and let us help you dial the bike fit in.

Here are some build highlights:

Simworks Cowcow bars.  Diacompe levers.  SRAM 11 speed trigger shifter.  Velo Orange Grande Cru Brakes with Paul Moon Unit hangers.  Analog customer cerakoted Nitto Seatpost and rear brake hanger.  Analog built wheels with Bitex touring hubs, Pillar butted spokes, Velocity Cliffhanger rims with Discord tubeless tape.  Currently running tubes, but we could convert to tubeless with sealant and valves (and a bit of labor) for 60 dollars.  1x mountain 9-46 E13 cassette and rear derailleur from SRAM.  Connex chain.  Middleburn cranks with Wolftooth 36t chainring and Stronglight alloy cup bottom bracket.  Simworks Taco pedals.  Brooks B17 Special.  When you take delivery of the bike it will have an IRD black technoglide headset.  That's an upgrade from the Rollcii in the picture.

Fits a rider with a 90-96 cm pubic bone height.  Generally that's someone around 6'0-6'6.  Let us know if you have fit questions!

If you came into the shop and wanted us to build this exact bike it would run a shade over 5k as it sits.
