UCO Clarus Lantern & Torch

No, not the cheap Shimano Claris with their ‘smoothly rotating hubs’.  Look, if that’s a selling point on your hubs, then they obviously have very little going for them.  All hubs roll smooth when they’re new.  The UCO Clarus lantern is both a flashlight and a lantern.  Switching between modes is as simple as pulling the top light diffuser up, and presto, you have a lantern.  3 lighting modes: dim, medium rare, and bright enough to read.  Hang it in your tent with one of those cute little Nite Ize S Biner’s.   The #1 would be fine.

Powered by 3 AAA batteries.  We recommend going to your local hardware store and getting, not just for this device, but all your battery devices, a handful of rechargeable AA and AAA batteries and a charger.  They’re affordable and of course less wasteful than normal batteries.  Compare mAh between brands to see which battery reigns supreme.  Higher is better, as they said in the 70’s.

Small enough for bike packing.  Makes an ideal tent light, cooking light, or setting up camp in the dark light.  Not an ultralight item, although it’s quite light weight.  It’s technically superfluous if you have headlamp, is all I mean.  But lanterns are more enjoyable to be around than bobbing bright ass headlamps.  So pack it if you can spare 81 grams and a 4.5 x 2” space in your bag.
