Here’s the thing we’ve learned. 4.8” tires are great. 5.05” tires, not so much. It comes down to Q factor. Can’t build a reasonably low Q factor fat bike with bigger tires than 4.8”. Odd as it may seem, the 20mm difference is huge when you are riding. Instant knee pain and hip pain on a bike made for 5” tires, like the Surly Ice Cream Truck. 4.8” tires spread out wide at 4 Psi, and tighten up nicely at 10psi for normal trail riding sans snow.
Like all bikes, we dig Wednesdays set up with drop bars, but if you are drop bar shy, we have plenty of alt bars, like the Surly Moloko, Jones Full Loop and Velo Orange Crazy bar that you can scope out. The worst bar ever is any norm core riser or flat bar. What are you doing? Listening to Kenny G cover Bush?
All fat bikes need way low gearing. Don’t let the hustlers tell ya other wise. Friend Adam who is a strong, fit rider, rides a 26t ring up front, and a 11-50 out back. That’s what everyone needs, if they are gunna ride the bike in snow, mud, slush, or swimming pools filled with marshmallows and Belgian Endive.

The Wednesday has all of the bits one needs for bike packing, but it feels fine with or without a load. It’s a Surly, and it’s steel, so it’s super tough. I once wacked a Surly of mine (accidentally!) with a ball peen hammer. It dented it, but the frame was and is still rideable. That’s the magic of steel. You can scratch it, dent it, bend it, and keep riding. You can’t do that with any other material out there. None. It’s bonkers. Bikes get dings, scratches, they suffer accidents. And all of them are trash afterward, except steel.
