Spécialités TA goes way back. Founded in 1947. Their Pro 5 Vis crank, aka the Cyclotouriste crank, has been made more or less continuously since 1963. Take that, Campy! These days, TA still makes cranks, chainrings, and a few other bits, all of which are made in France. Loads of companies make chainrings, but few make chainrings as nice as TA. I’d argue that for normal, 4 or 5 bolt chainrings, no one makes a ring as well finished as TA. The anodizing is perfect, the etched logos are subtle, the machining is impressive. The rings have a long wear life. They come in silver anodized with polished teeth or black anodized with silver polished teeth. These rings will make a basic crankset look cheap. We recommend pairing them with nicely finished cranksets: Rivendell Silver, Middleburn or TA Carmina cranks, mainly. You can run them on say, a Sugino XD crank, but they will over-shadow the crank and make it look clunky.
The rings come in a bewildering array of sizes, but we mainly focus on ‘normal’ ones. 110 / 74 BCD touring rings and 94/58 touring/mountain rings. If you need a 130 BCD ring, or a 135, or jeez, a 104, we can get that too, but it’s not going to be listed, contact us to get a special order rollin'.
We recommend a max jump between chainring size of 20 teeth if you are friction shifting. You can index a gap that big, but it’s more likely to give you gray hair(s). A better for indexing would be a 12 or 14 tooth jump.
If you want the lowest possible gearing, get a TA triple crankset with a 94/58 spider, or a Middleburn Crankset with a 110/58 or 94/58 spider.
Build scenarios and what to get:
If you are building a 110 / 74 BCD triple touring crank (Sugino XD or Alpina, Rivendell Silver, TA Carmina with a 110/74 spider) you need a TA Zephyr outer ring and middle ring and a Zelito inner ring.
If you are building a 110/58 Middleburn wide range double you need a TA Zephyr outer ring and a 58 BCD granny ring.
If you are building a 94/58 Middleburn or TA Carmina crankset, you need a 94 BCD outer ring, 94 BCD middle ring and a 58 BCD inner ring.
If you are building a 94 BCD double, you need a 94 BCD outer ring and a 94 BCD inner ring.
If you are building a 110 BCD double, you need a 110 BCD outer and inner ring.
If you are building a 1x Sugino, Rivendell, TA or Middleburn Crankset, you need a Wolftooth chainring with your BCD of choice, and a set of stainless or aluminum chainring bolts.
