A few reasons.  Vibration damping.  Handlebar enbiggening.  Tape padding is generally crap and packs out like a Payless sneaker in just a few rides.  The little pebbles on the road, cracks, dirt, gravel, all of these thing make your bike vibrate.  Those vibrations are going right up into your hands, your arms, shoulders, neck.  Gel kills some of that chatter, like putting your finger on a ringing bell or muting a guitar by putting a wet flounder on it.  Enbiggening is important too.  Bigger bars spread pressure on your ulnar nerve over a larger area.  Less hand numbness that way.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe put readyMADE gel on all of our builds with drop bars.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere's 4 pads.  You have to cut them to length.  They're wide enough for 52cm bars, but can be cut down to work with 38cm bars as well.  Two pads for the tops of the bars and the ramps leading to the hoods.
