Masi is a sleeper brand. I attribute this to their parent company not really knowing how to market them, but who knows? They’ve been quietly making smart bikes for at least 6 years. Probably longer, but that’s how long I’ve been aware of them. Before Masi was owned by Haro (not a bad thing, Haro knows all about steel and durability) they were a famous road bicycle company. Some of the best bike builders of the 20th century worked at Masi. Coppi, Anquetil and Merckx rode Masi frames. They could have ridden anything they wanted, and they rode Masi bikes. The current Masi steel line up is strong, and the Giramondo 27.5 and 29 are stars in that line. Unfortunately they are discontinuing both of these bikes for 2021, so now is your first and last chance to get them built up Analog-style.

The 27.5 model takes a relaxed roadish geometry, add big 2” tire clearance for 27.5 wheels, disc brakes, and lots of bike packing braze ons. Make it tough enough for bike packing, light mountain biking. Cover it in the coolest production paint job I’ve seen in ages.

The spec is affordable but QUALITY.

Dig: Shimano deore cranks and rear mech. Microshift bar end shifters, which can do friction or index shifting. WTB handlebars. I love the Masi setback seatpost. I wish we could sell them. It’s forged, 1 piece, set back. All the right stuff. Wide range gearing. Good TRP disc brakes and rotors. The tires are a smart tread pattern but not tubeless ready. The rims are tubeless ready though, and come pre-taped. The hubs won’t last forever, but the bike is so affordable that you can save up some scratch and get new wheels down the road.

Add a Brooks saddle, a marginally higher stack stem and some better tape, better bars and you have a great adventure bike for under 2k.

The Giromando 29 is essentially the same bike, same geometry mostly, but designed around 29" wheels with clearance up to a 2.25, and the fork is a bit less stiff. A matte gold paint job.
