Folding knives go way back. The concept is around 2700 years old, dating to the Second Iron Age, which was covered extensively and masterfully in Iron Age II, with voice overs by Jack Black as Ezecool and Wilford Brimley, who played the Mammoth. Unrelated, I just saw someone roll by the shop window, driving a riding lawn mower on the sidewalk, while ‘walking’ two dogs on a leash. Poultney is magical.
Back to folding knives. The Spanish were famous for making nice swords, but with the invention of muskets, the market for swords died down, and people started to pack smaller forms of personal protection. Nowadays, knives are primarily used to open letters, slice fruit and to give the TSA folks an excuse to rummage through your underwear.
Of course, knives are far more useful than that. For camping, bike packing, etc, you should have a reliable knife for camp chores. Knives are basic tools of survival. If things go sideways (caught in a cold rain, need a warm fire), you need a knife and a fire striker and that’s about it.
Castillo’s Navaja knife is perfect: small enough to disappear in your bag, but big enough to peel bark, gut a fish, slice an orange, etc. Low maintenance stainless blade. Very sharp! The construction quality on these knives is primo. They make your average ‘outdoorsy’ knife look cheap. Comes with a wet stone and a leather carry pouch.
Blade Length | 3". Handle Length | 3.5". Blade Material
Each knife comes with the following items:
Olive wood or Curly Birch handle. Both are gorgeous. Made in Spain.
