Candle Lanterns have a number of potential uses, but they were invented to hang inside of a tent to keep the interior dry. That’s why that have a long handle and chain. Drier is warmer, especailly if it’s cold out. They’re bright enough to get dressed with, and read maybe a large print book. If you are doing serious winter camping, and pack leaves or snow around the base of your tent, cutting off drafts, they’ll warm your tent a smidge too. Not a bunch, but drier and a touch warmer is not a bad thing.
Candle lanterns are also good camp companions in areas where fires are not safe, or where you don’t want to make a fire ‘cause you might not be legally camping there. The candle burns for between 6 to 9 hours, and replacements are easy to get. We like the Beeswax replacement candles, ‘cause they smell good, but the parafin ones are fine too.
The Brass lantern is the beefiest, and it gets the warmest. Not burn the tent down warm, but if you are winter camping, this is your jam. If you are camping in the shoulder season, or summer, get the normal one.
The top of the lantern collapses for packing. The glass, and really, all parts except the body are replaceable if the need arises.
