Shutter Precision hubs are made in an old camera shutter factory in Taiwan (actually true!). The Precision part of their name comes from the owner’s penchant for making detailed microdot drawings of old master paintings on grains of basmati rice (not true). Shutter Precision hubs are a great ‘affordable’ alternative to Schmidt’s excellent Dynamo hub. It’s almost as efficient as the Schmidt when the light is on, but not quite as efficient when the light is off. Not a big deal. With contemporary LED lights, you don't need to, and we rarely do, turn the lights off. Daytime running lights are safer than strapping a reflective Pizza slice to the back of your bike, and I’d argue, look better too.

Here’s who should consider the Shutter Precision rim brake hub: Commuters who mainly ride with rear loads, or light front loads; tourists who pack light and are personally fairly light; road riders who are fairly light, that sort of thing. The rim brake hub has thinner flanges, a smaller axle and narrower flange spacing (and the spoke bracing angle therefore lackeths) than the Schmidt hub, which is why it does not want a ton of weight on it or a big front load. If you’re under 160lbs, check it out!

If you want/need the best bearings, widest flanges for optimal spoke bracing angle, and thick flanges, get the Schmidt.

With the 15 and 12mm thru axle Shutter Precision hub, there is less of a reason to get a Schmidt. The flanges are wider and a bit beefier. The axle is huge, plenty strong. The bearings are bigger, so they last longer. Get this if you are building a bike packing or thru axle bike on a bit of a budget. I’d rather see a rider have this hub and Paul Klampers than a Schmidt hub and Avid BB7’s. The difference between the hubs is minimal, the difference in the brakes is huge!
