This fifth iteration of the legendary underground race / ride promises to be an exhilarating challenge for screwball cyclists and adventurers alike, pushing participants to their their tether's end amidst the breathtaking backdrop of the Taconic Mountains. The Gorey Hollows V Race is not for the faint of heart. With its roots tracing back to the Rough Stuff Fellowship, this race takes riders through rugged terrain, steep slopes, and challenging single track. It's a true test of endurance and determination, with 80+ miles of relentless climbs and around 14,000 feet of elevation gain. Participants are not just racing against each other but against the unforgiving landscape itself.
The Scramble is basically half a Race, with no prizes, but mandatory cut off times, incredibly difficult terrain, and plenty of potential for suffering. The Scramble clocks in at over 7k of climbing.
The Ramble is the mellowest option, a 30 mile trip through rough class 4 roads, dirt roads and atv trails. Although short in length, this option is still fairly difficult!
The event is an intersection of autumn, diabolical challenge, and the Analog Scene. In the spirit of (ridiculous) adventure, riders are tasked with navigating through checkpoints, capturing photos of signs as proof of their journey. The route takes them through a mix of terrains, from single track to dirt roads, steep climbs, and hair-raising, butthole clenching descents. It's an experience that tests not only their physical strength but also their navigational skills.
To add to the mayhem, the race rules ban aero bars, suspension forks, and other modern conveniences to preserve the essence of the challenge. Only those who completed the grueling course without modifications were eligible for the top prizes. You can ride it with a squish bike, but you are not taking the pie home.
